West Burn Lane collects top national award
Hardies Property & Construction Consultants in St Andrews is celebrating one of its projects winning a prestigious prize.
The firm was to provide quantity surveying and CDM Co-ordination services for West Burn Lane, a contemporary and high end housing project of innovative town houses, maisonettes and apartments.
Designed by architects Sutherland Hussey Harris for St Andrews based Eastacre Investments LLP, it was awarded the title ‘Best Building in Scotland’ by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland at a ceremony at the Royal Museum of Scotland.
Completed in February 2015, West Burn Lane was Hardies’ first project working with Eastacre.
Gary Ovenstone, partner in the Hardies St Andrews office, said: “It is a very striking collection of housing right in the centre of St Andrews and it is exciting for the town to have this award winning structure here. It has got everyone talking.”
Mr Ovenstone outlined that the project was challenging in a number of ways, from the control of costs, covered in Hardies QS role, due to the extremely high specification throughout at West Burn Lane, to the fact that the site was very narrow and was a former disused storage/warehouse unit which lacked space for storage of materials or plant.
He added “The contractor had to effectively built and complete from the top end of the site, dismantling plant as they went to allow the external works to progress whilst the main construction work was still ongoing at the bottom end of the site.
“These are the type of challenges we face regularly at Hardies, working on a whole host of construction related projects to specific time and budget. It is always a team effort, working with the design team and contractor to complete projects successfully. In this instance, it has clearly been a massive success for all concerned.”
