Independent Scottish surveyors see benefits of merger

Two of Scotland’s largest independent surveyors are to merge in a deal that creates an enlarged business with an annual turnover of about £25 million, a network of almost 50 offices and about 350 employees.

Shepherd Chartered Surveyors and Hardies, which specialise in property and construction work, said yesterday that they were joining forces, though they will retain their own brands and office locations.  Both parties said there was little overlap.

Hardies, which can trace its history back to 1913, is best known for construction and project management along with building and quantity surveying.

Shepherd, founded in 1880, provides residential and commercial property management, valuation and building surveying.

The combined business will be jointly led by George Brewster, the senior partner at Shepherd, and Derek Ferrier, the managing partner of Hardies.

Mr Ferrier said the enlarged firm would have the largest number of building surveyors and valuation surveyors in Scotland.
