Langlaw Road Housing Development
Melville Housing Association acquired the site of the former Langlaw Primary School in Mayfield, Midlothian and an adjacent field in 2008 to construct their largest-ever new housing development, involving the construction of 133 houses for rent in three phases. Approximately 10% of the houses were constructed to an enhanced fit-out so that they could be allocated for mid-market rental – the rest were for normal social housing affordable rental.
The development of timber-framed houses and flats is based around several courtyards as well as along the main arterial road through the site. There are significant “green” areas and a play area has also been provided.
The development was short-listed in the Large Affordable Housing Development of the Year at the Scottish Home Awards, an indication of the high regard in which the development is viewed within the house-building community.
Funding was obtained from Scottish Government grants and Melville Housing Association’s own resources.
